Storm Response Guide – PEI Department of Transportation

February 7, 2018 by Brad Trivers 1 Comment

Have you ever wondered about sand and salt application on roads in Prince Edward Island? It’s a topic that comes up on a fairly regular basis in my conversations, and those of many MLA’s. Transportation critic Jamie Fox put written questions and got back the following answers. (view full PDF here).

Answers to the questions outline the amount in tonnage of salt and road sand used on Island roads along with the amount spent on it.  They reveal that the grade of road salt has not changed but the practice of pre-wetting the salt is now used.   As an added bonus a “Storm Response Guide” is included – for plowing and application of sand and salt based on the class of road.

Reviewed the storm response guide, in particular, relative to the Saturday storm. Yes, the plowing took place as expected along with a dose of sand (and perhaps some salt). What problem exists is that following that plow effort last night, a quick run over this morning, Rte 254 (Rattenbury) is nothing but a nightmare with excessive slush that should have been plowed to the sides. I hope this is not the quality of plow services we can expect throughout the winter.
