Community Supported Agriculture

April 11, 2017 by Brad Trivers Leave a Comment

Have you signed up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program in your area yet?  I would highly recommend it!

Here is my member’s statement about CSA’s from the legislature April 11, 2017.

List of CSAs on PEI - PEI Food Exchange

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to recognize the many Community Supported Agriculture programs in our province – also known as CSA’s.

A CSA directly connects farmers and consumers together through a “food subscription” in a community.

The farm pledges to grow food for the community and the community pledges to support the farm. It is a direct food-to-consumer relationship, connecting a community with its food source. By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become “members” of the CSA.

CSA’s are a growing trend in PEI and are helping Islanders support local farmers, create jobs in Rural PEI, and eat tasty and nutritious Island food!

Mr. Speaker, there are some 22 CSA’s on PEI that produce everything from veggies, meat, eggs, fermented foods and drinks, strawberries and much more.

These are just a handful of the many examples of locally grown agriculture right here on PEI.

Mr. Speaker, not only are CSA’s available in the summer, but the winter too – offering fresh local produce year round and supporting the economy.

Mr. Speaker, I have numerous examples in my area and my family just became a member of Debi and Tara Stevenson’s Little Victory Micro Farms – which we can see as we look out across the Clyde River valley from our kitchen table – to get our fresh vegetables and herbs this year. I also plan on signing up with the Sanderson family’s Hope River Farms CSA to get fresh chicken, lamb, pork, duck, and maybe even rabbit!

Mr. Speaker, I would encourage all Islanders to join a CSA and support the local economy and our agriculture sector. The PEI Food Exchange has a list of CSA’s on their website or you can find more information at bradtrivers.com!

Thank You, Mr. Speaker
