On March 25, 2026 I was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly by a secret ballot vote among elected MLAs. What does the mean when it comes to representing the constituents of District 18 Rustico-Emerald? Although there are limitations as to what I can do, the short answer is that I can continue to advocate for you – please don’t hesitate to contact me!
What does it mean to be the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly?
The Speaker is responsible for running the day-to-day proceedings of the Legislative Assembly and ensuring everything operates fairly and respectfully. In practical terms, that means:
- Presiding over debates and recognizing MLAs to speak
- Enforcing the rules (Standing Orders) and maintaining decorum
- Acting impartially, without political bias
- Only voting in the case of a tie
Beyond the Chamber, the Speaker also:
- Oversees the administration of the Legislative Assembly
- Chairs internal governance committees
- Represents the Assembly at official events
At its core, the role is about protecting fairness and balance in our democratic process.
What are the limitations of what a Speaker can do in their MLA role?
Becoming Speaker does change how I can act as an MLA, but it doesn’t prevent me from serving you. Some key limitations include:
- I do not participate in debates in the Legislative Assembly
- I must remain neutral on issues discussed in the House
- I only vote in rare tie-breaking situations
However, I continue to:
- Advocate on behalf of constituents outside the Chamber
- Meet with residents, organizations, and stakeholders
- Work with Ministers and government departments to address concerns
- Support community initiatives and local priorities
In short, while my role in the Legislature becomes more neutral, my commitment to District 18 Rustico-Emerald remains as strong as ever.
