Government Cannot Be Trusted With Seniors Housing

August 23, 2017 by Brad Trivers Leave a Comment

Problems with Seniors Housing Program wait lists, assessment process, and lack of a long-term plan are eroding confidence in government.

“Islanders are angry, and rightly so. They want to trust that the government is working in a fair manner in their best interest. With seniors housing this is simply not the case”, says Trivers.

In today’s Public Accounts meeting the Auditor General confirmed what Islanders have suspected for years about the Seniors Housing Program in PEI:

  • Housing wait lists are inaccurate, incomplete and poorly managed.
  • There is no standard process for housing officers to verify income, assets, and housing costs when people apply.
  • The housing assignment process is often subjective, and there is no quality control review process in place for assessments.
  • There is no long-term plan to address the current and expected future demand for low income seniors housing.

Trivers concluded, “The number one issue I hear on the PC Leadership campaign trail is lack of trust, and this shows exactly why. As PC Leader, and potentially the next Premier, I will get back to basics and ensure that government works fairly for all people.”
