Beef cattle financial protection program not working for farmers

The Ontario Beef Cattle Financial Protection Program is accessible to PEI producers that ship cattle to plants in Ontario.  It is alleged that the The Livestock Financial Protection Board that administers the program works in favour of the licensed dealers, as opposed the producer – specific details of a PEI case are available in confidence.

    • For more than 25 years, the Ontario Beef Cattle Financial Protection Program has protected cattle sellers when a licenced dealer defaults on payment. Effective July 1, 2011, important changes have been made in the program to:
      • Enhance the protection for sellers and licenced dealers, and
      • Reflect modern banking practices.

    • The Livestock Financial Protection Board adjudicates claims and administers the compensation fund.

      • Ontario Cattlemen’s Association
      • Canadian Meat Council
      • Ontario Livestock Auction Markets Association
      • Ontario Independent Meat Packers and Processors
      • Ontario Livestock Dealers Association
      • Other industry groups
