Improve Brookvale Ski Park and eliminate $380,000 per year cost to taxpayers

February 7, 2016 by 2 Comments

“Why can’t Brookvale Ski Park operate with a profit?  It is forecasted to lose $380,900 in the 2015-2016 budget.

For example if the Lodge was renovated with a licensed restaurant like most other ski hills it should be able to generate additional revenue.  Also, to improve customer service, on busy days 4 passengers per chair lift should be enforced to more quickly process the alpine queue.”

Resolution

Feb 24, 2016: Steps have already been taken to ensure 4-passengers-per-chair. Thanks to the great staff at Brookvale!

A licensed restaurant will not bring in an additional 380k in revenue. It may not bring in ANY additional revenue when you consider the additional costs it would incur and the length of the season. Just sell and privatize the entire operation. It will sink or swim.

From a concerned Islander: “Another brookvale strategy would be to use it as the venue for the jack frost festival. Why the city/province (not sure) spend so much money trucking snow into town for the festival when there is a great venue at brookvale. That would help both the festival reduce costs and boost the profit at brookvale. Also think a better attempt to make money in the off season is in order. Mountain bike training, camps, races, etc. for example. So many ways to bring it into the black! Great article to get people thinking!”
