MECL Must Take Accountability for Lack of Electricity Capacity on PEI

January 8, 2026 by Brad Trivers

Brad Trivers speaks at the Standing Committe on Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, questioning the accountability of Maritime Electric for the lack of electricity capacity that may causing rolling brownouts and blackouts.

MECL has dropped the ball on their duty to provide electricity to Islanders – a legislated duty that gives them a monopoly and pays their shareholders an over 9% guaranteed return based on the value of assets they own (see IRAC Order UE23-04 https://irac.pe.ca/wp-content/uploads/Order-UE23-04.pdf). All these costs are directly passed on to Island ratepayers. MECL […]

Geothermal Energy on PEI

Brad, you said, “I believe that in the very near future with advances in power storage it will be feasible for communities to generate all of their own electricity through clean renewable means – like wind, solar and hydro.  Government needs to plan for and proactively work towards a future of inexpensive locally produced clean […]

PV Solar Panels on PEI

June 17, 2016 by Brad Trivers

Global_energy_potential_perez_2009

Photo-voltaic (PV) solar panels convert sunlight to electricity.  Since sunlight is free, renewable and non-polluting – installing my own set of solar panels always seemed like a fantastic way to satisfy my family’s energy demands.  However, PV solar panels are expensive, not generally available and require a certain level of expertise to install properly – so I hadn’t looked at […]

Electricity price increase charged for full billing period

electricity-Rate-Rise

When an increase in electricity rates occurs the entire bill that encompasses the rate increase date has the increase applied to it.  Only the portion after the rate increase date should use the new rate.  For example rate increase came into effect on March 1, 2016 but if a client billing period is from February […]

Generate hydro electricity at Bagnall’s Pond

The waterwheel installed at the dam on Bagnall’s Pond in Hunter River could be used to generate hydro-electricity.   Action should be taken to make this happen.

Need transportation-specific energy incentives

Electric Vehicles 2016

The transportation sector is the biggest contributor to PEI’s carbon emissions at around 40% – and about 36% of total energy consumption on the Island. Energy incentives are needed to encourage consumers to move to transportation options that produce less carbon emissions.  For example, the Ontario government has an Electric Vehicle Incentive Program. Remove HST from electricity

Removing the provincial portion of the HST from electricity should be done because: only GST is charged on on heating oil electricity is the main output of renewable energy sources and a switch away to electricity from non-rewneable energy sources should be encouraged electricity is used by all Islanders and is a basic need that […]
